Good morning I bought a nh l555 without an engine in it but it came with a good used running engine Engine out of machine had already been discarded if but was a 1903 and the engine it came with is a 2204 which had the adapter and flywheel switched over already When I put the engine in everything lined up and splined together nicely with little agrivation and got it all bolted up, the only thing that was off was the engine mounts were 1/2" off so re drilled I put coolant in it and ran it last night and noticed a sight noise from rear of engine / hydraulic pump and then started leaking hydraulic oil into flywheel area Does anyone have in-site on what could have caused this? Engine is coming out tonight and imagine it's the front pump seal but what would cause it to fail? Out put shaft to long??

Is the leak inside the engine housing or on the outside.. Your hyd pump should be on the end of the hydostat under the seat

It's leaking between the bell housing interbally
Engine oil or hyd oil? There is a line that runs over the top of the bell housing from the hydrostat that goes to the filter. Check t hat to see if it has a hole in it. Mine had leaked for years and I could not find the leak. It turns out this hose had a chaffed spot on the bottom side and when I changed that my leak was gone. Mine was dripping oil off the bell housing. You could have a bad seal on the hydro unit

Just a guess but Hyd oil there could be a seal on the hydro or if it is under the hydro unit I think there are some lines under the re. I can look at mine tomorrow as I have the motor and hydros out of it . I don't know if there is a weep hole on the hydro unit or not. I don't think there is but I can check that also if you want me to. I would say hyd oil would have to be coming from behind the engine under the seat

You can get a parts diagram at Messicks website which is very helpful
Awesome thanks I will look at that tonight and maybe start pulling motor back out .... I just hope I'm not into pumps

You have a shaft seal #40 in diagram. part# 703639. #41 is a retainer part# 66800. These are old part #'s so may be a new number. This is from a Service Catalog issue 10-92. Good luck

So I pulled the engine out and noticed the adapter piece with spline that bolts to flywheel is rubbing in trans housing... maybe who ever switched parts on put it on backwards which also could have damaged seal I'll try to post pictures of some one can tell me if it's correct or not

Can't seem to figure out the picture but one side of the spline hub had a bit of a cone shape Does cone go towards or away from transmission It's currently towards the transmission which I am thinking pushed the seal in to far and caused cone to run on housing?? Thanks for the seal numbers I will order today

Checked mine today and the taper goes toward the pumps or away from the engine side

Hmmmm well that's not what I wanted to hear Sounds like that's how mine is but the outside side f the cone has rubbed on the pump housing all the way around and wore a shallow groove on it Is there a spacer or something that would sit in the input shaft to stop it from touching or is there something I'm missing??
