My 1988 575 skid steer is having a problem and I was hoping someone had a idea what i should look for to fix it. it starts right up and runs smooth, but as soon as I let go of the starter key it shuts right down, I can hold the starter key on and it will run indefinetly, not that I want to do that, I assume its electrical, though i have little experiance in repair of this, Any help or advice would be great, thanks, sean

It sounds like a problem with the fuel shut off solenoid or the relay/timer that controls it. I don't know your machine so I can't tell you much but I would start at the solenoid and see if it has power with switch in the run positon. On other machines the solenoid is controlled by a timer that powers the pull coil on the solenoid when you first turn the key and then it switches to different winding just to hold the solenoid open.

Thanks for the advice, I am far from skilled in this but I;m trying to get moer self reliant. So if I dont have power at the solenoid I should replace the relay/timer and if there is power the solnoid is most likely bad and should be replaced? Thanks in advance for the help again, Sean

As it runs when the starter is turning, your pull coil is working, it sounds like your hold coil is burnt out, or the wire is broken. It could also be out of alignment not allowing the plunger to fully seat. If it doesn't, it can do this too. Confirm you have power going to the solenoid.
I'm assuming it has a solenoid like is used on Kubota engines, it has 3 wires that pull the fuel shut off lever.

Here's a image of the solenoid. Like I said I don't for sure that there is a timer/relay on you machine it could just be controlled by the key switch.

Thanks for the help. I'm gonna check the solenoid for power with the key on when I get to work Monday morn, I hope thats it and it an issue with the wire or plug coming into it. If I dont have power to it I'm assuming the power comes from the ignition? guessing, and maybe I should check the wiring on the ignition? I appreciate the advice.
