Hey guys I have a jd 250 skid steer that I just bought. When I went to look at it I thought it ran a little rough when idling but smoothened out when wide open.

After comparing it to my friends 240 it definitely seems to only
Be running on 2 cylinders. It vibrates and shakes at lower rpm. Engine doesn’t have any knocks or unusua rattles.

It seems to to have good drive power and spins out when driving into piles but I still feel it runs rough compared to other 3 cyl diesels

Seems to me that if it was bad fuel then all cylinders would be effected.
well yes and no, IMO<
as pending compression levels in each cylinder, and or injectors flow rates/pressures ,
fuel can be that is old, lower in octane , contaminated , gelling o??
fuel can still effect running issues be it one cylinder or all of them, or in between!
yes might be a lower odds seal, but I would never rule it out! I ain;'t claiming to be any expert here, just over the yrs I seen some odd things happen!
and when trouble shooting I try to rule out everything I can , that I can1

MRBB,if this was my problem the very first thing I wood do is look at the coolant in the radiator for any signs of oil. I'm looking for a possible head gasket problem. Next check the engine oil for signs of water or collant leakage. Next I would pressure test the cooling system. I am looking for coolant leaking into the cylinder. And moving on a compressing test is in order. And finally remove the glow plug or injector and run a borascope inside the cylinder. These are the steps that I would take. Ken
Note, with the engine running and at operating temperature with the oil fill cap removed is there any blo-by? In all actuality I suspect that this maching may have been over heated and may have a scored cylinder. Does the engine smoke while runniing? Given the limited amount of information I am simply throwing spit balls at this anomaly. How many hours are on it?

When getting gas the other day, I noticed the diesel pump had the notice that DIESEL contained up to 10% ethanol! WTH? I never thought about that. That probably translates to the usual fuel degradation problems we get from the gasoline in storage. It might actually be worse because of the intermittent use of equipment. Just something to consider when you come across problems. I don't know if ALL diesel has the ethanol or just certain ones. I was at Malwart.

The compression test numbers for the John Deere 250 Skid Steer typically range from 350 to 450 psi. These values can vary based on engine condition and maintenance history. It's essential to compare your results against these benchmarks to determine engine health. If the readings are significantly lower than expected, it may indicate issues such as worn piston rings, valve problems, or head gasket failures. Ken.

Now whear have I read this before?
