Hi I have a 743 that has been leaking a significant amount of oil. I pulled the pump and noticed that one of the plates on the side was loose. I pulled the covers (plates) off and one had a gasket (shim) one didn't) I bought a shim kit and I have multiple shims different colours. Can anyone help me with which shim should be used? I'm hoping this is my only problem, as I didn't want to pay for a seal kit if I didn't need one. Thanks, Joe

The shims are there to remove all side to side play. There is no set shim(s) to use as bearing wear and slight differences in batches determine what shims are needed. I don't have the details on me here, but if you send me an email i can find them for you tonight “taz38sup at yahoo.com.au“ the at = @ of course.
Where is the oil coming out? is it from the seal on the shaft? Usually the cause of the leak is the rear seal where the engine couples to the pump.

I was to cheap to buy the shim kit so I sanded the bushing down, the preload isn't that important as long as is not tight or loose

Thats what i did too!
I printed out that repair manual, just couldn't remember exactly what i did.

Thanks for this information. I am unfortunately not a machinist by any means and obviously need to become more knowledgeable regarding these pumps. I rebuilt this bobcat after it was in a fire. The pump appeared to be rebuilt and I did not do anything other than install it.

It sounds like the person that re-built it before you didn't shim it correctly. Its pretty easy to do, i did one about 4 months ago, so far its working too :)
OldMachinist - can i swipe a copy of the repair manual if you have it scanned in? i was sure i had a copy, but for the life of me i can't find it..... I think i need to organise my electronic manuals better, as in put them ALL in one place.

Tazza, I don't have that one all scanned yet I just scanned the pages he needed. When I do get it scanned I'll upload it and post a link. It might be a the middle of Dec. before I get to it. It's prime deer hunting season right now.

Not an issue, hope you do well!
