First, Id like to thank the response’s that I received for the 742 Ford gas motor and install an igniter and do away with the points. Thanks for the resistor information, and now everything seems good. The machine runs great!
Now, I inherited this machine from my father and I use it in far northern Wisconsin. Pretty much just to clear snow and very occasionally in the summer. Lucky if I put on 8-10 hours a year. Two years ago I changed the hydraulic fluid, filter and cleaned a (I think it’s called a port block filter??) it was like a stone type filter that was quite dirty. After all the fluid drained I was told to put in AW46 hydraulic fluid. Now I read that it says to replace it with 10W-30 or 10W40 class SE motor oil?? What should I use? Is the hydraulic fluid in there now okay? Also, any other filters that I should know about.

Motor oil and hydraulic both start out exactly the same. The differences start when they put in additives for water or anti-foaming etc. the old motor oils did not really have any additives but todays motor oils are full of all sorts of crazy stuff. Some of those additives are not good for hydraulic seals. While hydraulic oils will have additives to protect hydraulic seals.

I personally would stick with a good hydraulic oil. The AW46 is a good all year weight oil depending on your specific climate. If you are in an area with really cold winters you may want to go with an AW32.

If you wanted to switch to a motor oil you really should look for a basic oil with little to no additives.
