I recently replaced my small hydraulic filter. the old one (NAPA 1259) was 10 micron rated and and allowed 12 to 16 gallons per minute. On NAPA's web site there is no mention of a bypass valve for this filter. And the cross referenced filter to FRAM (P1654A) specifies that there is not a bypass setting for the FRAM filter either. I believe the correct FRAM filter for this unit is P6485. This filter has a bypass setting of 3-6. I am assuming I do not want a bypass function as this would possibly allow unfiltered fluid into my hydraulic system. I have a light on the dash that tells me if my Hydraulic pressure is low. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I believe that the bypasses on filters are to keep them from exploding or collapsing from excess pressure or suction, and if they completely plug, unfiltered oil is better than no oil, especially in engine oil as they tend to start making metal fairly soon if the oil supply is cut off.

I'm with flyerdan, unfiltered oil is better than nothing at all.
The idea is, the filtered particles are wedged in the V of the filter element, so when it by-passes fluid doesn't come from this part, so it "shouldn't" allow any filtered trash into the system when it goes over the by-pass.
I actually thought the filter housing was the part that allowed it to by-pass and not the filters, i'c check your filter housing, it may have one built in already and the filter doens't need one.
