Hey guys, I have a 1975 M-700 with a VH-4D. I live in North Pole Alaska and it gets very cold here obviously. I'm considering putting in a bypass for the hyd oil cooler during extreme cold operations. I cant block off the cooler because that would block off the cooling air for my engine. I've seen this done on numerous other pieces of equipment but just wanted to see if anyone has done this on a skid steer. Thanks!

ONLY in those type of weather conditions would that be advisable. The main function of the cooler to is OBVIOUSLY cool the hydraulic system, so I would remove the cooler entirely from the machine (if possible / easy; like the 753's are), then install a hose to join the two hydraulic hoses back together. Then in the summer re-install it. The trick will be to remember to top it off in between hooking everything up. Good idea about not blocking air to the radiator, although blocking a portion of airflow in cold weather will help it warm up quicker & help it burn cleaner, too. Does your temperature gauge work good? If so, give her a try. If you are not sure = TREAD SOFTLY!

I don't see why this could not be done for winter operation. I take it you are not running a hydraulic snowblower with it or any other attachment that would tax the hydraulic system?
BTW - drove through your neck of the woods about 12 years ago on my way from Fairbanks to Delta Junction. Beautiful country, but like you said c-c-c-cold!!
Cheers - SR
