My buddy just got a skid steer and we are using it for the first time to level his back yard. Prior to use we changed out the fluids. By recommendation of another guy he knows, we used regular old 10w30 motor oil in the hydraulic resovoir. Is this correct? The machine is working fine but the hyrdaulic rams squeek a little now. Here is a picture of the resovoir I am talking about -marked with red arrow.

Is it the rams squeeking or are the pivot pins needing some grease? I'd pump some grease into every grease fitting you can find on the lift and tilt pivot points and see if it goes away.

Yep thats the Hyd tank filler and 10/30 motor oil goes in there. But it does sound more like you need to grease it. My manual says 50 hours for grease intervals, but I prefer 8 to 10 hours. There should be a grease fitting at every pin, if it ain't there find the hole and put one back in.
The lower end of the bucket dump cylinders is a high load area, and these go dry first in my eperience.

Yup, NH uses 10W-30 motor oil for the hydraulics, which is a shame because it costs more when it comes time to refill it. (I use whatever is handy and have no problems). The motor oil foams less and has better rust preventative properties.
And Ken's right about the squeaking.
