I have a 1987 743. ran fine last summer. I've tried several times this winter to start it with zero luck. It has been very cold in Michigan - sometimes down to -15 degrees F. Today it is 47 degrees. I glowed for 30-60 seconds, cranked. It won't fire. I get some some puffs of smoke while cranking. Sometimes a sputter. I've checked the 3 easy glow plugs to check - they are good. The glow plug relay is good. Starter is good. I took one fuel line off where it goes in the cylinder head. The fuel was liquid. I had my wife crank the starter - about one per second a small drop of fuel came out of the line. is that right or does it shoot? I ermoved the line closest to the back of the machine that loops from the left, them up and down and to the right. What else can I check? Could it not be getting fuel? Could I have messed something up trying to start it many times during the cold and having it never fire up? Could I have caused damage? What would be causing it to not fire? I've heard of diesel fuel gelling up. How could I tell if that is the problem? How do you "ungell" it? What else can I try? Any and all help is appreciated!

First shut off the fuel by the bottom of the tank then take the bottom glass part off the fuel filter clean it reinstall then take the plug out of the top of the metal that the filter goes to open the shut off then pump the ball till fuel comes out or put light air pressure in the tank put the plug back then pull the little hose off the bleeder valve on the fuel pump get fuel there put back on then open the bleeder and pump some more then start once going shut the valve........if you can't get fuel then your pick up line is bad in the tank..........how did you check your glow plugs?

And you do know you turn the key to the left to glow?

SO the drip at the injector - once per second or so - that is not enough fuel then correct??? Ok I know where the shut off valve is on the side of the machine - mine is connected to a couple rubber lines on the right side of the machine under the lft cylinder. Not sure if that is standard or rigged. I'll turn that off. Then where is the fuel filter at? I see the hydraulic filter, air filter, oil filter. Is there a sight glass on this? Is that what you are referring to when you say the bottom glass? Where is that located? There is a plug on the top of that metal that the sight glass goes on? That is a bleeder I am guessing? I pump the little primer bulb until fuel comes out of that? then put it back in correct? I checked my glow plugs by taking each one out. I connected a piece of wire to the first glow plug wire and to the tp of the glow plug. Then had my wife turn the key to the left and grounded the plug on the battery. Nice and red on the 3 I checked. You say plug and bleeder - are they the same thing? Thanks for the help!

Yes I had my wife turn the key to the left to glow while I was holding a glow plug in my hand with wire attached to the top of it and attached to the output wire of the glow plug relay and the base of the glow plug grounded to the battery. They glowed bright red in a few seconds and the last half inch or so of the plug.

The injector pump block is to the left. The line comes from it, goes up, over to the right, then down into the head. That is where I disconnected it. While cranking, how much fuel should come out of that line?

My fuel filter is on the right hand side looking in the back behind the hyro filter the bottom of this is glass so becarful I would suggest replacing the filter since you did not know where it was and most likely your problem....on the top right back side of your engine where the little rubber lines meet there is a small wheel valve that is your bleeder valve.............have seen some 743 that the fuel filter was on the left side but think tat was mmoved

A steam not a drip........also the 743 the fuel line goes behind the tank in a grove over time they shrink and get pinched behind the tank

Sorry top left side of engine for the bleeder
Ok. So upper right side of engine bay - look for the sight glass. Be careful it's glass. Got it. I've had the machine for 4 years and have used it alot. What would cause this all the sudden? The cold? On the top of the metal that the sight glass screws into - there is a wheel you are saying? So I turn that to open. The squeeze the primer valve? does it squirt out of the bleeder wheel? sorry for all the questions. I've never done it before.... I live in southeastern Michigan detroit suburb. thank you! Why would it start doing this all the sudden anyway?

Ok so you are trying to isolate if the pickup from the tank is clogged or not. Got it. Nothing personal but I don't post where I live - had a strange thing happen from it once. Not on this site. ;) Has nothing to do with you but with people searching the internet, etc.

No prob just might know you live there for years and did horse shoeing ......go see if you get fuel going and we will go from there

By now you have found that the bottom part of the fuel filter is glass and is a water seperator and needs to be empty every now and then or it will freeze and lock up your fuel

Did you happen to check the engine shut down cable? Maybe the lever is stuck in the shut down mode. Should be toward the rear in the run position and forward to shut down.
