as by youre posts i i dont think you are some shade tree. you got game.albeiet the vintage lands in youre lap. i am guessing you are down under,(clossue here) same issues if you need support i am game. enough said. i could use alittle help on this 371 cant seem to get the backfire out timing is an issue points are suppposed to hit at 20 btdc witht a 25 gap being as it has only one pivot i am having trouble obtaing. (history came in only run with choke on) i pulled head lapped valves new points new condensor etc ried to get bench running . got sweet but not sweet enough, plan put in in am so i can get hyd pump load on it than dial in any advice?
 
What sort of distributor does it use? can you pull it out and rotate it one tooth so you can get your 20 degrees btdc. I assume this is your issue, not having enough adjustment with the pivot you have on the distributor?
This is the one thing i really do love about diesel engines, no worrying about ignition timing.

sorry meant to follow up left running sweet, it was a one lung cast iron kholer cust could not drive off trailer, job got complicared as they always do with the 20 yr olds , one head bolt snapped. sent to my machinast dude , lapped valves by hand,deglazed bore re ran comp check after all back together an a leak down, all good the carb kit was a hundred bucks consited of nonething in retrospect would have gone new, but end result left running good, may of had rpm a little hot but within spec, no miss no backfire, had to shop fuel tank for cleaning ended up getting coated, all in all good out the door, cust feed back (bill 1400) did not meet his expactations) hyd work there as well, back to the i want it fixed right but dont want to spend any money thing.(did try get traded )offer was low as on would expect, he seemed to think it had antique value,(now that it runs drives lifts and tilts maybe it does) not for me to say ,, still i think do not piggy bank a unit bury it on back 40 and move on, heck i couldnt hear myself think when it was running , and that was the way it came off the floor,
