I decided its time to either fix my 8c or get rid of. I got a spare onan engine I had picked up. The only thing wrong with my current engine is starter is hit/miss when starting. My plan is to pull engine and use starter off my spare engine? or am I better going with a new aftermarket starter? How big a job is it to remove engine? I assume for starters I need to unbolt cage and remove the big cross member in back... Any input appreciated.

well do not your chicken before they hatch. it could be a bad ring gear, replacing the starter might help but you still have a problem that will haunt you. I feel that a used starter or a after market starter is like a 50 ,50 thing just over the net guessing as to the condition of each on a guess. pull the engine and make the call based on what you find.

Thanks- Got the engine out yesterday- got the starter off and cleaned up to drop off at a shop. Have them go over the original verses buying china one. It looks to be original starter..or at least has the onan label on it and says made in japan. The engine is actually quite clean for age. The ring gear looks good and clean. no chewed up or wear on teeth. I see one side of teeth have a taper edge cut off.. I thought at first was wear but looks factory. I read on net some ring gears are made that way? I'm debating abought dropping close to $500 on factory 'new' Mitsubishi starter but I will see what starter rebuild shop says. Have reputable one here local.
