I am in the market for a skid steer to use on the farm. I have found a Gehl 4640 with around 1600hrs. Are these good machines/ what should I look for when inspecting it? TIA.

I have a 4640 that has around 2800 hours and it works fine, I have owned the Gehl for a few months. The only problem I'm aware of is the horn doesn't work.

Look for hydraulic leaks. Open it up as much as possible and look at the floor. Check for play in the axles and slop in the drive chains. Try all the functions, especially by lifting the front with the bucket and see if it drifts down. See how it starts cold, if it has the Perkins that can be a PITA for cold starting.
