ANY IDEAS ON THIS? Gehl 3610 Diesel cranks but won't start. After cranking it a few time it will blow smoke but won't start. Used it about 2 months ago, it started fine, although twice that day the engine started racing on it's own, i shut it off and started it back up and it would run fine. This is my first Diesel so i don't know much about diesels or skidsteers for that matter. any help would be appreciated.

If you're not getting lots of smoke when cranking, i suspect fuel delivery. It could be as simple as the fuel shut solenoid is not working properly, not sending fuel to the injectors.
You can always get a helper to spin the motor and spray some WD40 into the air intake to see if it fires, if it does, your compression is good, and it has to be fuel related.

The fact that it ran away a couple times is concerning, if you could stop it by shutting it off with the key that indicates that it isn't ingesting oil from somewhere else, but probably due to a malfunctioning injector pump, or it could be a governor.

Well, Got it started yesterday. it ran fine for about 5 minutes or less and then it started reving really high and blowing alot of smoke. And it looks like it is blowing some type of oil out of the tali pipe and on the engine. got to shut down. waited a about 20 minutes started it back up and it ran fine again for about 3 minutes and then started reving and smoking again. parked it and left it alone . IS this thing shot or could it be something fixable? I never had a diesel engine before so i don't know what to look for?

How old if the fuel? I see you were looking for a filter, did you change it with the new one filled. Sounds like a leak before the pump but could be the Governor like the previous person said.

Fuel is new. The old fuel filter was not even dirty but i replaced it anyway. It doesn't seem to want to shut off . it shut off by itself while reving really high and smoking alot of really thick smoke. . left it sit for awhile, its started right up and did not smoke . i just parked it. i am sure it would start reving high and smoking again if i keeo it running. i don't know what to look for. Very scary when it it does this and you can't get it to shut off.

Is it a turbo motor? if the seals are bad, it could be sucking up oil, making it run away and smoking badly, it would explain the oil out the exhaust too.....
If the motor stull runs, i don't believe it's doomed, hopefully it's something fairly easy to repair, just need to find what's not right

Anyone know if there is a PCV valve on a 3610 gehl diesel? if so where might it be on the engine. Someone told me to check it went bad?
