I have the 543 with the left side drive out....... The shaft of the left side drive out of the machine will not turn, the right side when I had it out spun freely, no problem and this is the working drive. Now I just unpackaged the new one that I ordered and the shaft on it will not spin, I will hook it up tomorrow and try it but what is the deal with these? Off the machine with no hookups how should the shaft be?

I assume you mean the drive motor?
The shaft should be tight when its disconnected, It can turn if you get enough leverage with a pair of pliers. With oil in it, it will not turn.
As they age and wear a little, the shaft can be turned by hand, but still should be rather tight.
