Are you close to any skidsteer salvage yards? There are a couple listed here in past posts and there are people on e bay that sell engines also. I think you would want a engine with a governor or one that a governor could be mounted on. Pull the old one and measure it up, check with the dealer also on price of a block or rebuilt. Some ag engines such as from a smaller combine may fit also. Your radiator setup may affect what you use for transplant also. good luck.

Jerry hit it spot on, you NEED a govenor so a normal car engine will not do the job.
You would probably find its a standard setup so a Kubota diesel would go pretty well, they are a good engine and reasonably priced. Get measurements and depending if its a direct coupling or east/west setup depends on the style of engine you need to get. If it uses an ISO bell housing finding an engine to suit will be easy, if not you will need to make adapters.

I've just bought an old 1830 with a petrol (gas) car engine fitted. It is a pretty rough job but works anyway. The engine looks like a small one from a Mitsubishi all i can see is the words "Mitsubishi" on the top of the air filter case and "12 Valve" on the top of the rocker cover. I've heard of people putting 1600CC ford escort motors in The engine appears to be direct coupled to the hyd pump. No chain, no belts There is a hole in the plate below the sump I suppose to allow for oil change. I am not sure if the hole was pre existing or added when installing the engine. To connect to the hyd pump means that the water ports on the engine are at the opposite end to the radiator. This was fixed by extending the radiator hoses and installing an electric fan, it seems to work ok. The muffler is a series of multiple joins welded together - again rough but works. you could use flexible pipe instead. I have only used it for light work so far, moving mulch and some soil I set the engine to approx 1500-2000RPM and it goes ok. It is probably under powered but for what I need I guess the bonus is that I am not stressing out the rest of the poor old machine. If you want me to post some pics I will. Thermal

thermaloverload, I know this is an old thread, but I would love to see some pictures of the ford escort engine setup. Also, how is it running? Does it work ok still? Thanks
