Engine valves question

Hello all. I am trying to get wise to this engine that I am servicing, the Wisconsin VH4D. My spring compressor didn't work so I had to use a C-clamp and some trial and error. Some came out nice, some rifled out. I noticed that some of the springs are longer than the other but I didn't get a chance to take note as to whether the exhaust or the intake valve had the longer spring. My other question, one had these orifices at the bottom that are on spring loaded ball bearings and some are not (pictured). I have the maintenance manual but it doesn't show clearly what these valves should look like. Hopefully someone can shed a little light on them for me here. Thank you.
