E45 Water in Fuel Filter

My 2019 E45 has recently started throwing an error indicating 'water in fuel filter'. I open the screw cap at the bottom but only fuel comes out. The message keeps reappearing. This happens regardless of how many tanks of diesel I run through it. Could this be a sensor?

yes , I have seen where there was a little water in the area of the sensor (this style used 2 exposed pins ) 1 or 2 oz. maybe and I guess it penertrated the sensor itself and would throw a code, until it was changed out.

I tried to clean the sensor but to no avail. I ended up purchasing a new fuel filter water separator which solved the problem!
