Hello to all: I've got a 2000 Cat 226 skid steer and the engine cranks but wont start.I pulled the fuel solenoid out and it starts right up. I then installed a new solenoid and it dosen't start. Fuses are good,I swapped around the 3 relays on the fuse panel and still nothing. Not sure where to go from here. Also I ran the machine for a couple of hrs with the fuel solenoid pulled out and noticed when I had to reinstall it I had oil sprayed on the engine. Am I loosing oil pressure and damaging the engine by doing that?? Did I it screw up?? When I go to acc with the key the white wire is hot, when I turn the key to the start position the red wire goes hot. Pull back and hold. Thank You Kindly Greg

Are you testing power with a meter or a test light? If you have a bad connection or partially broken wire it will read with a meter but not a test light. Otherwise maybe try grounding it to the battery. Voltage won’t matter with no ground

that was probably fuel not oil that was sprayed out

Hi farmshop: I tested it with a test light. Ill try grounding it to the battery in the morning depending on the blizzard we are supposed to get.

Hi Tom; It was definetly oil and not fuel. Will I lose oil pressure if I run the machine without will I damage the engine with the solenoid pulled out??

If it was pressurized it would really pump oil out. Does your solenoid push in to shut off or pull. Could you sacrifice the fuel shut off by cutting the linkage off and putting the solenoid back in

The solenoid pulls in a 1/4" shaft to let the fuel flow ,When I turn the key off the shaft springs back out cutting of the fuel. Thats why I was concerned I thought I was loosing oil pressure

You could try running wires from the battery and see if it works. Otherwise test the coil with a ohm meter to see if it’s a open circut

Pretty sure the oil that came out was just splashed, not under pressure. Oil is only pumped into bearing areas, fuel pumps and turbos on engines, the rest is just slung around from the moving parts.
Good advise on trying to operate the solenoid with a battery and wires, Just don't apply power to the pull coil too long or risk burning it up.
Check for power at the solenoid too, make sure it's getting power. You have done everything right with checking fuses and swapping relays.

Hi Tazza: I was getting power to the solenoid on 2 of the lines (red, white ) wires at the same time ??? I put on a jumper wire from the negative side of the battery and spliced into the (black ) ground wire on the solenoid and the engine fired right up. So it seems to be a bad ground to the solenoid but I'm not sure where

Bad grounds can cause all sorts of issues, glad you have it working.
There should be power to both red and white wires when it's meant to pull in, then power should be only on one.

Well it's running ok.Black wire is still spliced to the negative on the battery to the black wire on the solenoid. I'll track down the bad ground when warmer weather comes around. Thank You all who helped me out!! Greg

The Mystery is solved, well sort of. I brought the machine into my garage and lifted the cab again. Out comes a pissed off squirrel . Picture Chevy Chase in that Christmas movie when the squirrel comes flying out of the Christmas tree. I mean this thing is running around my 3 bay garage like crazy up and over everything. So I open a door and out it goes.I set up some bright lights towards the bottom, belly of the machine and I see 2 eyes looking at me.Poke around a bit and see more eyes ,then more etc. There was a nest, condo commune in the bottom of the machine with a huge pile of leaves as a nest. Ok so I need to get rid of them but how? Kill them ,smash them etc. No I'm not that mean but I did suck them up with my small shop vac. It was just enough suction to hold them on the end of the extension nozzle and drop them in a box . I then brought them to the edge of my lawn and within a minute or two the mother came and carried them back to another nest. In all there were 7 baby squirrels in the nest and a pregnant mouse. So anyway after vacuuming out he nest I see a flat ground wire and harness coming off the flywheel housing with a couple of wires chewed up .One of them must be for the fuel solenoid ground so does anybody know what the other wires are to that particular harness?? They look like there going to be extremely hard to get at to repair. Anybody got any ideas ?? Thanks Greg

I'm sad to say i giggled like a school girl at your description of your unwanted house guests. Good to hear you managed to reloacte them, hopefully they won't setup camp again in your machine causing issues again.
The sad thing is, they are very cute, but they cause all sorts of damage.

Tazza: I couldn't believe how big the nest was.I looked in that area when I popped open the cab the first time but didn't see anything. They must have just started to build it. Any idea what else is connected to that ground lug It's got several wires connected to it but only the fuel solenoid ground wire seems to be the only one affected. Everything else seems to be working Thanks Greg

There are multiple grounds all over the harness, hopefully the others are all good still. You may be lucky and this is the only point that was damaged.
Fingers crossed

The only thing that I have that wasn't working was the fuel solenoid. At least now I know if something isn't working I have a good idea where the problem is. A BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT CHIMED IN!!!
