Hi guys, I have just purchased a Deere 317 moving on from my Bobcat 753, its a 2008 model with 1200 hours on it, really tidy unit that runs superb is strong in its lift and drive, no leake ect, my question is when driving forward or backwards the drive is almost silent yet when I turn it or drive into a pile it really growls from the hydraulics (its the same sound as you get when you try drive with the brake on if that helps you identify it), there is no cavitation knocking that I can hear, there is no lack of power or drive just the noise, just wants to know if its a typical Deere noise or something sinister lurking, or a easy fix, cheers.

How fast are you running the engine? Try it at about 3/4 throttle if you are running it slower. I think that is a similar drive as the new Holland and while bobcats seem to be pretty quiet most times the new Holland is growley when turning. 2000 rpm seems to be about right for it.

And the new Holland will let you know right away if you try to move with the brake on also.

Im running it at 80 percent throttle, around 2600 revs, it tops out at 2900. matters not what speed the engine is revving its much the same, only time I notice its much less is when its first started for the day and the hydraulic oil has not reached its usuall temp,

Is it running to hot and thinning out your oil

It sounds normal to me , the new Holland is a lot quieter at first and seems noisier as it warms up. I changed from 10-30 motor oil to hydraulic oil last fall with some improvement. Could be hearing loss helped too though. If its like the new Holland , gear reduction drive and longer wheelbase which takes more snort to turn. Long wheelbase is good though never ever have the bouncy, jumpy effect of the short ones.

Thanks for the reply Jerry, everything runs at the normal temp, Ive come from a Bobcat 753 with the shorter wheelbase and do love the better ride of the Deere but it does damage the ground a bit more, I believe the Holland is a close cousin to the Deere so Im happy to hear its normal noise, ill play around with fluids to see what happens but I am using the recommended oil.

Had two of them and they were/are both like that right off the dealer's lot. Hydraulics are noisy on them for sure. I run mine full throttle all the time and it makes no difference.
