I just bought a Case 1830 skid loader from a guy. I do not know much about the history of it, but the guy claims he used it for a short while and it started to make a grinding noise on the left side and then the left lever froze in the neutral position. When I picked it up, both levers were froze in the neutral position. It runs fine and the loader/bucket works fine. I finally got the left lever loose by tapping on the linkage where it goes into the pump. The lever will now go though the entire range of motion with no result what so ever. When the lever hits the limits in either direction< the pump will chatter. I got the right side lever to move a little bit, but with no results at all. It does not sound like either motor is turning. The skidsteer has plenty of hydraulic oil and the filter looks good with no metal shavings. All hoses appear to be in good condition. Are my pumps shot? Could someone maybe lead me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The Case drains on the drive pumps empty into the right reservoir(opposite the filler) Usually, any major failure will send metal into the bottom of it. Drain that side and check for metal. I would suspect that you had a drive pump(s) failure. You can remove an access cover beside the motors and check the chains just in case.
The drive pumps are really simple to rebuild. If you can ge them out, you can rebuild them. Dont bother trying to get the drive pump parts thru case, they have a listing but can no longer get them. If the pumps need rebuilt, you will need a rotating group, seal and gasket kit, and a swash plate if it is worn or banged up. I got my parts thru Central Hydraulics, but several companies offer them. Shop around. You will also need to flush the entire system.

Ok, I'll try that out then. Would a case 1830 sevice manual walk me through the steps to rebuild the drive pumps? or who makes these pumps exactly? thanks

Yes, a sevice manual will help. They where made by Cesna/eaton. If they need rebuilt, you will need the numbers off the pumps.
