In the process of getting a 1997 CASE 1818 with the twin cylinder onan engine. The muffler is bad on it and they want between 600-950$ for one!!!!!! Really? If it had the diesel engine, that muffler is 80$. I can find used on ebay for 60$ on up or should I go old school tin can and hose clamp type of fix?

I powered my 500 bobcat with a 18 hp wisconsin engine , for a muffler I got one at tractor supply meant for a international cub added a flapper cover ,it has worked well for 2 years so far. I got less than 50 bucks involved.

I looked at Messick's and they seem awful proud of those mufflers indeed. If you can do a temp patch with a formed piece of metal, it will buy some time. I've done that on my 700, it has a pinhole at a spot I can't weld a patch on without removing it so that's what I did. Eventually I'll scrounge up some stainless pipe and tig up a good muffler for it.
If you can weld, you might find whatever cheap auto muffler will come close to fitting and salvage the mounting flange and supports off the bad one.
