I still have the old Tecumseh in my 1816. I really don't want to put another $2000 in this machine, but it is handy. When I was in Harbor Freight last time, I saw a 22 horsepower V twin for about $700. The reviews are pretty good. So here's my concern. My machine doesn't run now, and I forget which way the engine turns. The Harbor Freight says that it turns counter clockwise looking at the PTO. Does anyone know which way the Tecumseh turns? If it's the other way, is there a practical way of dealing with the situation?

Small Engine Warehouse lists a conversion kit: http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/356447-Case1816.html?sc=17&category=1710310 Looks like a pretty standard engine, so rotation is likely the standard CCW direction. The engine that HF lists is a copy of a Honda GX670; great engines, Price is awesome. Hope it works!!

I was looking at that, too. I looked all around for specifications on the Vanguard with regard to rotation direction. I found a number of manuals, but nothing with direction of rotation. But I think it pretty much has to be a standard.

Can you spin the original engine with the starter? That would confirm it.
