Broom attachment hydrualics

I was just going to hook up lines on a home fabed broom and was wondering if I need any special valves to protect drive motor.or is speed slow enough to to just shut off and reverse without any extra relief valve

People have installed a relief valve to prevent motor damage to allow fluid to flow around the motor, just as you were thinking for fast stops and reversing direction with a load on the motor as it will want to try and keep spinning.
