2018 T550 with 1830 hours, noticed a small oil leak on the right side of motor looking at it from the back side, bought the Bobcat protection plus warranty when I bout it back in September with 1815 hours so I figured I would take it and let them fix it, called today and was told that the o ring at the bottom of the dip stick has blown out and that's what is causing the oil leak and they believe it to be excessive blow by and it will need a new engine, the machine runs great and hasn't given me any real trouble beside having to replace the fuel pick up tube in the tank, any one had this problem?

if it has warranty and costs you nothing let them replace it,

They believe it to be excessive blow by?

I would think they would know if it was excessive blow by.
I am not sure how the crankcase is vented on that machine. I have had tractors, in the past that had the crankcase vent plugged pushing the dip stick up under a load.

I agree, right now I am having to wait for them to send the claim in and see if the Protection Plus warranty is going to cover it. I've only put 15 hours on the machine since I purchased it so hopefully bobcat is good about fixing it under that warranty that I bought and it isn't a issue!

I would think that new rings are needed not a new engine, maybe it had a lot of idle time and the rings stuck which if you are lucky a good hard run for a bit might free them up. good luck with bobcat.

what does the oil look like?

what does the oil look like?
Just looks like normal used oil, changing the oil is the only service I haven't done in the machine as I knew I was going to take it to bobcat to have the oil leak fixed so didn't want to waste new oil because I thought it was coming from the oil pan and it may have to be drained, I've been keeping a check on the oil level and it hasn't used any noticeable oil, the oil leak was very minor to the point that first I thought it was residue from cleaning the engine area and was either oil or hydraulic fluid residue but I would clean the area I noticed it and after a few hours use it would show back up

I have to think there is a breather on the motor, have to look at our machine and see how, our old 843 dies have some blow by but never blew out a seal, its venting is on the cap on top of motor, usually where one adds oil but not accessible so they fill on the front of timing case

surprised they have not tried replacing the seal and try it,

Thinking that's what they are going to try pull on me now, called today to try to get some info and the service woman in charge wasn't there so I had to talk to the other office woman and she said she seen in the notes they had ordered a new filler tube and O-ring and at this point that's going to be unacceptable to me especially when the head mechanic I spoke with up there 3 weeks ago told me that would only be putting a band aid on the problem

when they put in the new dip stick tube you will be able to see how much blow by there is by having it run and pulling the dip stick out slightly. Since you purchased a extended warranty if it is not that dealer exclusive maybe try the next closest dealer for another opinion.

Talked with them this morning and they said they ordered just a new o ring for the tube to test it and see if that's where the oil is coming from, which makes no sense to me, if the motor has excessive blow by then a oil leak isn't the problem we are looking for at this point!!! It's been there 3 weeks and I'm growing very impatient with them at this point, was also told when the o ring came in and she could get a tech to work on it then they would test it! Seems like if they have had a customers machine for 3 weeks then it shouldn't be put to the back of the line, she said after that test then they would have to tear it down and look for the root cause before ordering a new motor to replace it, seems to me they should have already torn into to find the problem since clearly it has blow by per the technician

There is probably a process that must be followed for the insurance company backing the warrantee to pay out.
It sounds to me they are crossing their T's and dotting their I's.
I know it is frustrating when your machine is down, but I would give them the benefit of the doubt until it becomes clear you are getting the run around.
Just sayin.

I think they sold a extended warranty on a machine they possibly knew had a problem( it will be alright) and hoped you would miss the issue and they would make a sales goal on warranty sales. seems that this happens way to much in general . they do not want to eat the mistake. the warranter is gonna ask questions ,bad engine how could you sell equipment with a bad engine and sell a warranty with it ? how did I get so cynical?

sounds like its the warranter wants some clarification and this is why the dealer is taking his time, its also a little odd the service jumped to the engine needs replacing without any testing, to be honest why is getting a O ring so complicated? within my city I can get any O ring or seal made if not in stock next day, the dealer should have done this right away not look at replacing the engine as the first option, frankly not thinking much of the dealer if its 3 weeks to get a O ring
