With a significant quantity of blowby out of the valve cover, I checked the compression, Compression test results 1= 55 2=65 3= 85 4=90+ Ford 1.6 Liter, Industrial Engine, I looked for months for a rebuild kit and have been advized that it would be more cost effective to replace the gas powered unit with a diesel. I've been told that Deutz makes a 30HP unit. If anyone with experience can give me some direction, rebuild? or replace? I like the idea of having a deisel in it for obvoius reasons. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Personally i'd do a wet test first. Get your pressure readings cold as you did already.
Give each cylinder a squirt or two of engine oil then re-test the compression. If it rises, it is rings, if not it is likely the head/valves.
If it is just the head, you can get it up and running cheaply.

Scrap the whole lot and buy something newer.

Chances are its worn rings. Do a wet test as mentioned. If the engine is still usable( no rods out the side of the block) theres no reason not to rebuild if you can do the work yourself.
You can source pistons,rings, bearings and gaskets from your local parts store or rock auto for a 71 ford pinto 1.6. If it needs machine work, that will add substantialy to the bill. get it apart and measure everything or take it to the machine shop and let them clean and check it for cracks and measure. theyll tell you what it needs.
If your in the market for a diesel after that, look for something in the 35-38hp range. It would be better suited to the machine. Kubota would be the v1903.

I didn't have much luck trying to match pinto parts with the 1.6 I have. I did find a bunch of information about the Ford Kent Crossflow 1.6 engine. Lots of parts on ebay.co.uk for this engine. Formula Ford is big on these engines. I'm going to try Foley at http://www.foleyengines.com/ for parts.
