Hello All! New guy here to the Forum. Small back story: I spent the last few months "re-building" an old 743B. Changed out many bad Hydro lines, new parking brake, new gaskets, bushings, LED lighting, thermostat, and sanded and repainted every square inch I could easily access. I ended up having to swap the motor because the blow-by was horrendous on the old one. Fully installed now. Question: Should I be concerned with the position of the screw on the throttle arm (In Melroe terminology: speed plate) on the engine itself? The shop that rebuilt this motor did not adjust the screw on the plate from where it was before the motor was rebuilt. When I got the new block in, I had to greatly adjust the linkage arm that attaches the cable from the throttle lever to the speed plate on the engine to get it to touch the screw (which I assume is set at "max" throttle that is safe for the motor). Assuming it is set in an appropriate position, should I not have adjusted my linkage cable so that it touches that screw? How will I know if the revs are too high? Now because the engine was "new" I only ran it at what I can assume is now a 1/2 to 3/4 power range for about an hour. I figured it would be best to at least catalog intital temp readings and check them periodically. Using a Thermo gun aimed at the motor afterwards (before letting it cool down/shut off) I got these readings: Coolant inlet/outlet: 170-180 deg. range Cylinder head (near upper right rear of the block below exhaust manifold): 207-217 deg. range Crank (lower right side) 185 - 195 deg. range Thanks! Mark

Those screws set min and max speeds, you shouldn't need to adjust them. Just adjust the other linkage so it connects to the throttle lever. I wouldn't be too concerned.
