Hi, I have a 742 that I'm changing all four axle seals and bearings on. Once I got into the chain case, I noticed one of the bearings from the gear case extending into the chain case. Figured you have to remove the cap (P/N 6565289 ?) to either tighten the bolt, or replace it if broken. What is the best way to remove that cap? It does not seem threaded, yet does not seem just pressed it to place. I have removed the sealant from around it, no help. Thanks for the help, and great Forum.

What cap are you talking about?
The axles are pretty simple, bearing cup sits in both ends of the axle tube, cone goes on the other sides, one at the axle hub one at the sprocket.
Remove the bolt inside the chain case that has a big washer on it, use a porta-power or a hydraulic jack with the pump part facing down between the back of the axle hub and chain case. Press out the axle. Assemble the reverse of that.

Thanks for the info on the axle. I'm referring to the dome shaped cap on the outside of the gear case. It is just to the aft side of the motor, about 3" in diam, and covers the bolt that holds the shaft that goes into the chain case.

You must have an early machine. Looks like the cover pops off like a hub spindle nut cover on a trailer axle. If you gently tap a chisel in from the side in a few places around the periphery, it should pop off.

Sorry, i should have read it better.
SkidRoe is spot on. Use a chisel or screw driver and get under the lip and pop it off. Silicone it back on when you clean the surfaces.

Thanks to you both. Since I never want to force anything, I guess it is time to get a bigger hammer. Pop it off does not seem to be something it wants to do, but I wanted to make sure I was not trying to pop something that screwed into place. Will reply when it comes off.
