Bobcat 632 air cleaner/filter

Was just wondering about the air filter on my 632. When I open the round canister and pull the filter out there is a finned plastic piece on the back of the filter. Is this piece just a spacer to center the filter or does it have a turbine affect with air flow. Thanks Steve

I believe it's there to make the air swirl around.
