Hi All trying to figure this out i think i need a new battery for my NH LX465 the old keeps going dead and yesterday (11/29/2025) had a charger on it set on low not jump to charge it up and then about an hour later i smelled something like sulfur i checked the battery and it was screaming hot and hissing took off charger right away I never any issue before but 4 months ago i had the alternator replace because it was saying (with warning light) 9.2 volts running so after that it went up to 13.4 volts great thought all fixed but now the battery keeps going totally dead and when charging it smells and gets hot now any ideas of what it could be for me to look at ? also what type of battery (make model ect...) i should get to replace it? is there something wrong with the alternator or it was installed wrong? any help to point me in the right direction would be great. and belated Happy Thanksgiving and future Merry Christmas

OK< some things to think about

when you say your battery started to hiss and hot and?? are you sure you had the charger set right on 12 volts, correct setting for your battery?

as some battery chargers have several different settings on them

using the wrong setting can over charge a battery, charge at wrong volts, or charge too faster

are you sure you had connections on the correct terminals on battery

as having them hooked up wrong can cause your issues

next, you said you were having voltage issues, and replaced alternator

did you have OLD alternator tested to confirm it was bad?

if not, if you still have you can take it to a shop and they can test it for you confirm, and they might even be able to rebuild it for a fair price and then you will have a spare one on hand!

are you sure the belt was at correct tension and not slipping causing your low charging issues?

have you confirmed that all connections are clean corrosion free and solid?
as if there not, that can cause voltage/charging problems

as for recommending a NEW battery for you
before buying a new battery, I would suggest you take it some place and have it load tested to con firm its good or bad, before buying another one!
and for sure before installing a new battery, again, I would make sure all wire connections, at battery, grounds and all the way to alt and fuse box are in good clean solid connections!, or a new battery might now solve anything for you!

BUT if you DO need a new one

I would buy what the machine calls for in CORRECT size, batteries come in many sizes, and the OEM< set and use different ones for many different machines, so NOT knowing what yours calls for, I'd look up what your make model calls for and get one in that size!
and in that size get the highest CCA one you can afford! and if possible, keep it on a battery maintainer, it will help in many ways!

and I prefer to stick with brand name batteries in AGM style!
lots of no name here today gone tomorrow china ones, and I avoid them!

Hi mrbb

Thanks for the information lets start from the top the battery was very hot to the touch and the hissing was the steam coming out of it 2 the charger has only 2 voltage setting 6 & 12 volts it was on 12 volts and the other settings are low maintain and high start (200 amps) it was on the low setting for a slow charge 3the connections are clean and the positive one is new (not that means anything). 3 they connections are color coded red = positive black =ground (so good there) 4 alternator was tested and was bad (why it was replaced) 5 belt is new and set to correct tentation as for the wires on it i haven't looked but was thinking maybe that might be the issue the unit is outside and it is snowing and very cold here right now will try and get to looking at that part as soon as i get it inside i didn't replace the alternator had a shop do that trying to get them to come and look at it but anyway thanks for the information and ideas and the new battery be for sure the OEM trust me lol

Thanks again

Sam

if your battery was HOT and steaming from being charged, it , to ME< means that the charger is NOT working correctly and was over charging it,
chargers do go bad over time!
A few yrs back I actually had a battery maintainer go bad and cause a over a grand in damages, by over charging things! and was a brand new charger, BAD from the factory!, SO< even new , doesn't always mean good!

NEXT< I would have battery load tested to see if its actually still any good, or did it get ruined(or was just bad() from being over charged!
as over charging a battery can damage it!

from there I would be taking voltage readings at alt and starter to see if there is some sort of electrical problem when running!

also, some thing to consider, if you do NOT have a battery disconnect, I would suggest adding one, so this way it can shut power off at battery after use and lessen the odds of any parasitic power draw when parked,
as well as if there is anything electrical down stream of battery,
as on these older machines, old wiring can have cracks, and or rodent damage,
and having a shut off, helps prevent possible shorts when parked, as well, and again, adding a battery maintainer if possible is also a great add on to consider!

If I remember correctly New holland skid steers of the LX465 and 5 series and up would hold a group 31 battery

Could battery be shorting internally? My son just had one do that in his Ram diesel PU. It got very hot to the touch.
