Hi mrbb
Thanks for the information lets start from the top the battery was very hot to the touch and the hissing was the steam coming out of it 2 the charger has only 2 voltage setting 6 & 12 volts it was on 12 volts and the other settings are low maintain and high start (200 amps) it was on the low setting for a slow charge 3the connections are clean and the positive one is new (not that means anything). 3 they connections are color coded red = positive black =ground (so good there) 4 alternator was tested and was bad (why it was replaced) 5 belt is new and set to correct tentation as for the wires on it i haven't looked but was thinking maybe that might be the issue the unit is outside and it is snowing and very cold here right now will try and get to looking at that part as soon as i get it inside i didn't replace the alternator had a shop do that trying to get them to come and look at it but anyway thanks for the information and ideas and the new battery be for sure the OEM trust me lol
Thanks again
Sam
if your battery was HOT and steaming from being charged, it , to ME< means that the charger is NOT working correctly and was over charging it,
chargers do go bad over time!
A few yrs back I actually had a battery maintainer go bad and cause a over a grand in damages, by over charging things! and was a brand new charger, BAD from the factory!, SO< even new , doesn't always mean good!
NEXT< I would have battery load tested to see if its actually still any good, or did it get ruined(or was just bad() from being over charged!
as over charging a battery can damage it!
from there I would be taking voltage readings at alt and starter to see if there is some sort of electrical problem when running!
also, some thing to consider, if you do NOT have a battery disconnect, I would suggest adding one, so this way it can shut power off at battery after use and lessen the odds of any parasitic power draw when parked,
as well as if there is anything electrical down stream of battery,
as on these older machines, old wiring can have cracks, and or rodent damage,
and having a shut off, helps prevent possible shorts when parked, as well, and again, adding a battery maintainer if possible is also a great add on to consider!
