Has anyone added a filter or screen right on the return line of an attachment? I'd like to add one on a grader attachment that I have no history on, and has cylinder trash stuck in one of the spools. Would be handy when renting attachments as well. Not sure where to start looking, or what to be looking for. Was thinking something like the case drain filter on a bobcat.

For some types of attachments a filter would be ok, the issue is, not many filters are strong enough to handle the pressure generated by the pump going forward, generally they are installed on the return line, being a grader, do you control the tilt angles with the thumb switch making the fluid flow reverse? If you have constant flow in one direction, a filter could work just fine, i have never done it though. On gear that had trash in it, i pulled it down and flushed with solvent first. To get trash out of tube lines and hoses, use solvent like diesel/kero and pieces of foam, blow them through to wipe the insides out.
A filter on a bucket would fail as you open and close it, so the flow reverses.
