I have a 2001 873. It will only run for about 20 minutes and then seems to run out of fuel. It will run fine when the tank is filled to the over flow and primed again...for about 20 minutes. I'm guessing there is a pickup tube off inside the tank. How do I get in to see if this is the problem and fix it.

just follow the fuel line. lol look under the cab. I can't remember if its in front of or behind the hydro unit. make sure you pull the supply and not the return, they are side by side

if I remember right the 873 pickup tube is between the hydrostatic pump and the engine and is very hard to get to , but do able , what I have done on a bunch of machines is to remove the battery and drill another hole into the tank and run a new pickup tube , grommet 90 degree fitting and fuel line , where you can get to it easy if you ever have to do it again , stick a bolt in the end of the old fuel line and hose clamp it so it don't leak any fuel

Another idea I read about in this forum, I think, is to cut a small section of the fuel filler hose, and replace it with a 2-3 inch section of metal tubing, like exhaust pipe. Before installing it, hammer a small area flat and drill a hole in it. Through that hole, put two screw together fittings, a 90* one on the inside. Attach a section to plastic tubing to the 90* fitting, and slide this down the filler tube into the tank. Install the section of metal tube in the fuel filler hose with hose clamps. Now you have a sealed fuel filler line with a fuel line on the inside, and a fitting on the outside. Hook your new fuel line to the fitting not mounted to the metal tubing section, and you're done. This is a very clever solution. I wish I had thought of it.

Sorry, corrected post. Another idea I read about in this forum, I think, is to cut a small section of the fuel filler hose, and replace it with a 2-3 inch section of metal tubing, like exhaust pipe. Before installing it, hammer a small area flat and drill a hole in it. Through that hole, put two screw together fittings, a 90* one on the inside, and a standard fitting on the outside. Attach a section of plastic tubing to the 90* fitting, and slide this down the filler tube into the tank. Install the section of metal tube in the fuel filler hose with hose clamps. Now you have a sealed fuel filler line with a fuel line on the inside, and the hose fitting on the outside.
