Hi all , I hope some one can figure this out.I have a 873 year 1999 with 2300 hrs on it . It will run for a while and begin to run out of fuel , I added a squeeze bulb in line from the tank to the pump and that helped , BUT when going fast or over rough terrain, it starts to fuel starve again , slow down , pump the bulb and all is OK for 10-15 minutes. Been that way for YEARS. now the issue is that I am not getting ANY fuel from the tank , so I mounted a tank on the roof and let gravity with a 'ill help from the squeeze bulb keep the 873 going. NOW the problem is the tank under the hood fills up real quick and pukes fuel on the ground. I'm thinking maybe something is wrong with the pick up in the tank. No clogged filters. Any suggestions ?

I'd start by looking at the pick up to make sure it is ok. Where is is leaking the fuel from? Unless it is pushing past the fuel cap, I'd say your tank is cracked or the fuel line has a hole. Get your tank problem figured out first. If that doesn't solve your probably. I'd check fuel pressure from the transfer pump. They are not high pressure, maybe 10 psi. Dutezs are very forgiving, I have seen then run with the pump not even working, they have no power, but will run.

Check your engine oil. If it has fuel dilution you will need to replace the transfer pump. They are notorious cor developing leaks in the diaphragm

Hello,
go back and read this thread on my 873 it should help you out some .
i will tell you this if you blow air back through you fuel line into the tank you will blow off your pickup tube and screen , so have a new one to replace it , on a fuel pickup pump i replaced mine , i also went and bought a electric fuel pump MR. Gasket green pump cost like 57.00 i used it to complety drain my fuel tank and run the motor on a five gallon can of fuel through the electric pump the motor fired right up and ran fine . so i troubled shoot the fuel system with the electric pump , i ended up installing a new pickup hose and screen and a new pickup pump my 873 runs better than when i bought . i now use the fuel pump to transfer fuel when i need it ,
Jess
