About two weeks ago now I put a rebuilt turbo on a Deutz 4 cylinder in a Sullair compressor , it's bearings failed , it cost $1,175 to replace the cartraige , the only thing still good was the housings , the Deutz dealer wanted $1,800 plus tax for a new one so it would have been $2,000 with the frieght , the compressor only had 154 hours on it but was 2 1/2 years old and out of warranty , I talked with the turbo guy for a while and he gave me some insight on way it may have failed , he mentioned oil supply , condition of oil , clogged exhaust muffler , breached air intake allowing dirt in , he also made a strong point to change the oil and filter , I could see a glitter of specs in the oil and was affraid it was all inside the engine , so I drained the oil and then poured 5 gallons of diesel thru the filler hole intop the valve cover as fast it would take it to flush it out , I let it drain for about an hour till not a drip was coming out the pan , filled it with oil and changed the filter , ran the unit for about an hour and changed the oil and filter again , I was affraid of the clogged muffler seniro what I did to check it out was stuff a air hose blower nozzle into the exhaust tube and jam a rag with a screw driver in to pipe around the nozzle to plug the hole , turn on the air and found it was free flowing but a lot of oil was blowing out the muffler , when I cranked it up it smoked for about 15 minutes till it got hot and burned and blew all the oil out that was in the muffler ----------------- being that yours failed so quickly I would think it is a oil supply problem , could be remanents of the failed turbo in the oil pan , a weak oil pump or a restriction in the supply or return lines -----------was it new or rebuilt , maybe if it was rebuilt , they did a bad job
