I am a complete newbie to the skidsteer arena, other than a few rentals over the years. I bought a 1967 863 last summer to help me with clearing and grading at a new house site I own. The 863 has 945 hrs., and the seller provided me with a detailed work order/invoice from the local Bobcat dealer showing it had been goon over and brought up to excellent condition at 850 hours (to the tune of almost $4000... seals, bolts, bob tac, fluid, filters, etc.). The machine has all hand controls. It runs very strong and tight. Now for my questions... first, the auxillary hydraulics will not turn on if the unit has been sitting in the rain. After running for a few hours, and drying up, it will work fine. Any suggestions for a fix? Secondly, the lift (left hand control) seems to be slow. The exception is when the 4 in 1 bucket is closed, if you actuate the toggle to close the bucket at the same time you try to lift, the lift will speed up. Make any sense at all? Looking for suggestions on if this is normal, or is it a problem, and if so, what is the fix.

1967? I thought they were still making clutch drive 600 loaders then...LOL! The auxillary hydraulics problem seems like a Bobcat I encountered with bad wiring to the computer. Removing and cleaning terminals was the solution. Corrosion may be your problem. Sow speed can be due to auxilarry hydraulics sticking open and causing a fluid bypass. Not normal for a machine to behave like that.

Good catch on the year... it is actually a 1997. I'll try to trace the wiring on the auxillary switch and see if cleaning connections might help. What would be the procedure to identify and fix the hydraulics sticking open? Is it a valve that can be cleaned or rehabed? Again, I apologize for my lack of knowledge on these machines... I consider myself above average on mechanical skills, but I'm entering entirely new territory on this one. Anyone who might be able to provide me a link to service diagrams, etc. would be appreciated.

Did you confirm if it was the aux hydraulics sticking on? If you loosen the lines to the fittings and start the machine, if oil pumps out with force its stuck open, if it just trickles its not operating. The other way is if you can get a coupler and attach it, if oil sprays out its open. Its normal for a small amount of oil to come out, but if it rockets across the shop floor, its engaged.
A stem may be stuck holding them on, this can cause the problem you have.

If it's a 97 it probably has mechanical hand controls for the lift & tilt?? If so I'd check that all the pivots and linkages are free but not sloppy. If it's only moving the spool part ways, then the aux being turned on would boost the pressure and speed up the function....I think. Also could be a bad relief valve for the lift not letting pressure build properly until the aux are building pressure. As for the aux not liking the rain, the controller for them should be found by tilting the cab up, located behind the seat up high. maybe check and see if the epoxy is pulled away from the aluminum and letting moisture in.
