Is there a cross reference guide where I can find an alternative and comparable thermostat for my 853 unit? would prefer not to have to spend $80 for one from Bobcat

Look it up from the engine manf. using the block # or take it out and go to napa and have them match it up, use no colder than 180 degree F.

Perfect timing - I just took mine out. The date code of October 92 tells me is the original one for my 1993 Bobcat 853. I haven't tested it yet to see if it still works.
82°C/180°F
2-1/8" diameter
Centered design, not offset
Has a jiggle pin

One more thing I just noticed - the OEM thermostat (and presumably the one Bobcat sells currently) blocks off the bypass port when fully open. Not sure how big a deal it is if a replacement thermostat doesn't close off that port when fully open. Obviously if a replacement thermostat is too deep and hits the port and cannot fully open, then that is not a good thing.
My not-expensive Harbor Freight caliper says you have 1-1/2" from the thermostat flange to the bypass port.

Blocking the bypass port is CRITICAL. Failure to do so will result in a portion of the coolant bypassing the radiator, even when the t-stat is full open.

Makes sense. I just tested mine and it opens fine, but won't fully close. One replacement I found is Stant 45778 - my local shops don't have one, but it's a whopping $14 on Amazon.

if you go to:

and put in your serial number you'll get a part number that hopefully will cross reference to something at an auto parts place. O'Reilly has a cross reference lookup option that shows up after you search for a part number it doesn't recognize.

I just put the cab back on today and started it up - ran for about an hour, so seems to be ok.
