I'm talking with a fellow locally that has a 1985 853 with what he says is an Isuzu diesel in it. claims all the rest of the hydraulics are great, but needs a chain case rebuild - bearings/seals, etc. The fellow seems nice enough and would rather fix it, but its too much for him to tackle becuase of his health and I guess the dealership scared him. Should be about 800 to 1k for parts I'm told. I know chain case work is not for the faint of heart, but if you knew some of the crazy stuff I've done this seems like nothing.
He is only asking 1k for the machine outright. I am seriously thinking of popping on it. Any thoughts? I would think I should be able to get that in parts if I tore it down.

If you only need bearings and seals, that's no problem. If the sprockets are worn, that's where the money starts to run away. Even if the chain case was a total write off, there is no reason why you couldn't get your money back on the rest of the parts!
