My first post on here; so Hello! I've got an 843 bobcat skid steer from the late eighties. It's in need of an engine replacement (believe it's a thrown rod) and I'm trying to source an engine. I've done some research and learned that it's likely a perkins or isuzu motor. There are no ID tags or plates on the engine. I'm wondering how I can tell what brand , model number etc of engine I need to source as a replacement. Thanks!

Find the serial number using one of the guides below. I couldn't find a breakdown for the Isuzu numbers but if it doesn't match the Perkins format you'll know it's a Isuzu.
Izuzu 4JB1-PK01

Perkins 4.154/200 series

Wow thanks for the speedy reply! That's a great help.

The machine serial number will give you the answer as well the first 4 digits tell the engine. 5026 was the Mazda built perkins 4-154.200 and 5037 was the Isuzu. Perkins has some complete refit kits in the $6000 range nothing like the old Mazda. Isuzu parts are usually available as well as the engines as complete remans.
