hello, i have an OMC 1700 belt drive unit and am thinking about moving to a different machine. our local guy here has an older 825 that he is asking 6500.00 for. what can you guys tell me about these units? browsing a few posts, looks like they seem to be a pretty good older machine, what would problem areas to look for be on these? how about parts - most things available that one would need? motor is the perkins 4 cyl diesel, is this pretty bullet proof, how about starting in the winter, not too bad or not too good in the cold weather? i would be using the machine on the farm to move hay and clean feedlots and general stuff like that. thanks for all your input! micheal

Personally i'd look for something a bit newer. For 6,500 i think iyou could get something a little more modern.
Do you want the larger machine? or will a smaller '7' series machine do the job? They have done a lot of tweeking since the 825 which i suspect was a mid 70's machine.
I'd think parts would still be available, just not sure on pricing of them.

Where are you located? It seems some places skids are worth huge money, and other places you cant give em away. In my area they arent moving too quick but I sold my nice painted 743 for $6000 with forks and a spare tire. I see people asking $12000 for 753s and I saw a guy asking $6500 for a good looking S130 a month ago, didnt have the cash to go buy it though. For $6500 I would think you could get a 843 which is more modern and capable, but I see people asking $10000-12000 for 843s as well. FWIW I paid $7500 for my 873 needing a few odds and ends but runs great and its a beast. If I were you wait and have cash for the right deal, they usually come at the worst possible time but a smokin good deal. My 2 cents.

Thank you Tazza, it just happened by and thought about it. i have to go run it yet and see what it feels like, before i go any further, i think a 7- series would be fine also, just would like to be able to lift and move 1,200 to 1,300 lb round hay bales and not run on my nose when i spear them off the second tier on my trailers. and i have a 9 ft dig depth backhoe that is going to get a serious workout when the ground thaws out in the spring, and figured the heavier machine might be better for running that, 7- series machines probably only give up what 500 or so pounds over the 825? so they would probably still weigh enough for these tasks. thank you. are the 825's reliable machines? how about that perkins, is that reliable and easy to work on if it needs it? thank you. micheal

i run a 1980 825 Bobcat , i got it in a trade deal off of Kansas City Craiglist , it was listed for 5600.00 and it had new drive motors and a pretty good unit , i use it on my 10 acres
it can handle any big bale with ease , the 825 is like a 70 era small block chevy to me
all straight forward , no warning codes etc.. ive painted , rewired mine and did alot of upgrades as well as far as comfort , enclosed the cab and built a door .
as well as making my on bale spike , 3 pt conversion, stump bucket , forks , 12 ft boom
if you do get the 825 i have all the manuals
owners, operator , parts & service all original Bobcat manuals .
you can call Bobcat give them the serial number and they can tell you the year
of the machine , as far as the Perkins it seems to be a pretty good motor
mine started right up in 19 degree temps saturday had to use the glow plugs twice for 45 seconds though .

ok, thanks for the info, i have to go talk to the dealer yet, to see, but that looks like it would be fine for my needs. i tried to pick one off the second row on my trailer and had to abort and flip it off the far side with the spear as i couldn't get away from the trailer with it! darn it, don't like fllipping bales with the cats and chickens around. i will let you guys know what i find with it, it sure isn't as pretty as your machine, but didn't look awefully bad either, it is cold up here so that is probably good time to go looking. thank you. micheal

I've never operated a bobcat with a perkins diesel. But I have operated other pieces of heavy equipment with the perkins. My findings are they tend to be cold blooded. Plugging them in, in any cold weather is a must. And all glow plugs must be working. Even in moderate temps when you wouldnt think they should need glowing, they do.
