I have a 1977 825 bought it 2yrs ago its been working fine. bought it cheap haven't done much to it, but now it has quit pulling, had this happen a few mths ago changed filters it worked till now tried the same thing again, it will pull forward but no reverse its making a whinning noise. any help figuring it out would be great

It is hydrostatic drive and not clutches right?
How is the lift and tilt, no noise and good speed?
It could be a few things, i assume both sides are the the same?
I'm just thinking it could be the coipling between engine and pump has let go.

Really sounds like it is time to remove the engine for replacement coupler repair time. I'm pretty sure you can (probably) look behind the engine to check it out first. But, if it was broken, would he have drive in any direction? at all??

Did this happen all of a sudden or gradually get worse or time?
You would think that if the drive coupler is gone, you would have no movement, and much more horrible noises than just whining.
I am thinking that there might be a charge pressure issue, maybe a blockage. Just looking at the plumbing layout, there does not seem to be any sintered filters, but there are a couple of orifices that may be blocked.
There also appears to be 2 filters in the system. Have you changed them?

lift & tilt work fine, forward drive works, but is slow to respond at first, I have replaced both filters,

As it lifts and tilts, it's not the coupler.
I wonder if this machine has a hidden suction line filter. Is there a square block on top of your hydraulic pump with hoses running into it?

I think I found the issue, 1 of the internal hose fittings is loose not supplying fluid to the drive. A real pain to get to.

Well, if it is loose & leaking fluid, you are sure to lose pressure. That helps explain it.

That machine has three filters. The hidden one is up under the pedals, really poor engineering. Jerry
While your in there check all four high pressure hoses to the drive motors, and the low pressure return that comes from the filter assembly under the pedals and returns fluid up to the rear of the machine near the rear filter. The are both in my experience prone to failure. The drive motor hoses sometimes come loose from the constant vibrations, but the low pressure return can get eaten by the front drive sprocket if it moves around too much ( ask me ), that machine was the best piece of equipment I ever owned, and the bain of my existence at times. Good Luck. By the way those guys are right, that filter under the pedals is a serious pain to replace... Brian
