763 Starting Problem?

I'm new to this forum and just bought my first skid steer. It has cranked with no problem for the first 3-4 days until one morning it would turn over and over wanting to fire but would not. after a while it finally fired and seemed as if it was flooded. Now it does this every time I crank it for the first time each day. Once it cranks it will crank fine the rest of the day. I did find the fuel valve at the pump was open and closed it. I put four new glow plugs in it with no help and checked to make sure they were geting power to them. It was in the mid 60's here yesterday and when I tried it for the first time it did the same thing until it finaly fired. Thanks for your help!

perhaps the fuel pickup tube rotted off in the tank? open the bleeder and prime until the bulb is hard. i could be wrong but def sounds like a fuel problem.

If it runs fine once it starts would that be a fuel pickup problem. I had a friend loan me his skid steer recently and it would start if the bulb was primed and then die. I found the pickup tube had broke. When you say open the bleeder are you talking about the bleeder on top of the fuel filter or the round knob on the injecter pump?

I'd start by throwing in a good charged battery, see how it cranks.
You say it tries to start but not quite there, how so? what colour smoke?
Checking the power to the glow plugs, you are getting a good 12v? not just a few volts?
Is it an automatic glow timer or do you have to hold the key to the left to heat? how long are you glowing? or is it an automatic one that counts down? does the power to the glow plugs continue till it reaches 0?

The guy behind the counter at my local bobcat dealer told me the valve on the injector pump should not be open, Yesterday I opened the bleeder on top of the fuel filter and some bubbles came out. I pumped the primer bulb until I got fuel and then closed it along with the valve on the injector pump. I will see how it cranks tomorrow. Tazza my battery seems strong by turning the motor over fast and for a long time. It will seem as if a cylinder will fire every so often and the smoke is a little black. It's possible you have a crack in the pickup tube if you had bubbles at the injector pump. After you bled it, see if they appear again later on. If so, that is possibly your problem. Air in the system will cause all sorts of issues with starting and keeping running.
As the counter counts down, you should hear a click when it hits zero, that is the glow plugs turning off. That is exactly what it is meant to do. Sounds like that side of it is good, and if the battery holds up for good length cranking it must be good too.
As you know, ensure the bleed screw is closed. Even give the hand primer a good squeeze and get someone to crank the engine to see if it will start if it haves problems again. It could be a fuel pump issue as well. This will give it more pressure up to the injector pump.

Keep an eye on them, see if they appear next time as well. When the system is primed, there should be no bubbles entering,. If they are, you have a leak somewhere.
