I have a 1999 763 with a deisel engine. On average how long does it take to get the engine out? Are they a real pain in the butt? This thing has 2000 hrs and is totally caked with greasy gunk in the engine compartment. It needs new belts, the fuel gage is not working properly, it needs powerwashed and I have a couple of minor hard to get to leaks. Would it be better to replace stuff and clean as good as I can with the engine left in or yank the engine out?. I am very mechanically inclined so that is not an issue. Thanks for any info.

It takes me about an hour to get the engine out. The easiest way is to remove engine and hydraulic pumps together. Before doing anything, buy degreaser and get the pressure washer handy. Clean out the drain holes under the machine and blast away. The engine does not have to come out unless it has leaks or other serious problems. You can gain access to it by removing the air ducting and fan gearbox with the cab up. The fuel sender often fails if the connector gets cut or its terminals rust out. If for any reason you need to remove the fuel tank the engine must come out. Don't forget to replace the tank grommet and the fuel line in the fuel tank. You will be sorry if you do not.
