I have an mid-nineties 753 and yesterday when I shut the machine down, the coolant was boiling. The temp gauge doesnt even seem to be working. First thing I could think of was the thermostat. Can anyone tell me where it is or what else to check? thanks!
 
Is the fan belt still there. (is it blowing air out the sides)
Sometimes the spring loaded belt tensioner sticks and the belt slips at high rpm causing a overheat. Could be t stat of course too
Rad and oil cooler not covered with debris.
You need to get a functioning temp guage in there or a hand held infared just to test with.

If the thermostat was stuck and the temp sender was working, the reading would be off the scale. I'd get a new sender, your old one or gauge sounds to be dead. If you short the sender out, it should read full scale.
The thermostat is in the housing that connects to the top radiator hose.
As Ken said, an IR thermometer is really helpful, you will know if its really getting hot,

Check the thermostat housing, it will be screwed into it. Follow the top radiator hose back to the engine, you'll find it. The bottom hose goes to the lower part of the engine.

Dad and I replaced the thermostat and temp sensor today. gauge now works machine does not overheat! thanks for the help man, these things are a real pain to work on compared to my race quads!

the machine was running hot today. kind of off and on. temp was low 90's and I moved 92 tons of 3/4'' clean stone into the foundation of a new house. anybody have any more ideas? I used standard coolent from NAPA, the overflow has antifreeze in I wonder if the fan belt is slipping under full power? doesnt seem to get as hot when I back it down

did you lift the oil cooler and pressure wash the fins of the radiator , it may be matted up on the under side that you can not see ---------------- also pay close attention to the blower fan belt , the belt will get worn thin in width and drop down farther into the pulley then usual which makes it looser and startes eating away at the insides of the platic pulley , the bearing and or the plastic pulley my be worn out , or the bolt that the spring loaded tensioner arm pivots on is gauled up and sticking

What Fishfiles said and you might put a pressure gauge on the rad to see if the pressure builds when the engine is running. You may have a cracked head leaking compression into the coolant. If you overheated this thing once, I'd be sure to check.
