Replacing the engine in my 743B. Bolting the U-joint to the flywheel. One of the bolts snapped and it is stuck in there good. Tried a couple of bolt extractors with no luck. Any suggestions on removing whats left of the broken bolt? How much force does the U-joint handle? Could I run it with just three of the four bolts? Thanks.

If any of the bolt is still above the surface, you can weld a nut to it and it should come out. Beyond that, drilling it out and retapping and/or heli-coil is the only option. You will need all 4.

Were you trying to take the bolt out when it broke?

I would never use old ujoints when they go can cost alot of damage you can get new ones from loaderscourceparts for a hundred bucks but look at the bolts four of mine were a bit to long and could put it in a bind use blue locktight if you were taking yours apart when it broke a bit of heat can help

Don't evan think of running it with bad or missing bolts

Thanks for the replies. I was putting it on when the bolt broke. Looks like I will be drilling it out and re-tapping. I will buy a new U-joint - good idea.

put in a new u joint while you are changing the motor they aren't much money and can destroy the machine if it shatters

I would take another run at it with some heat and a easy out........do not forget the locktight
While you have the engine out pull the shroud and give your rad and oil cooler a good cleaning if you take them out for this put the engine in first makes it easy to line up the ujoints when putting the engine in also look at the two steal lines the cross just to the right of center they rub and fail there also the steel line in the shroud gets blasted and pited I had my three made local for a hundred bucks will save you in the long run
