743B hard starting

I checked the glow plug ohms, all are ok, 1-2 ohms. Traced out and fixed wiring problem, installed a new glow plug relay, now the glow plugs work, but take way too long. It takes well over 1 minute at 60 deg. and still doesn't start quickly. Can glow plugs need replacing even if they check good with the ohm meter? I use a very small shot of ether in the air filter and it starts very quick. The previous owner always used ether. I have not checked compression, suspect may be a little low causing the problem, but I'm not ready for an overhaul. I just want to use it for light work on my 6 acres occasionally, and should last me a long time. I was wondering about installing an ether system, operated from the cab, it would be so much more convenient. Any thoughts on this idea?

DO NOT USE EITHER will burn up the motor damage might already be done wd40 is better pull a glow plug and hook it up to a battery should glow about a 1/4 inch all the way to the tip if not replace

If its been on the bottle for a while it likely has somewhat low compression. The plugs can test good but not glow properly at the tips. A weak battery or feed cable for the plugs will also cause the plugs to act slowly. I have also seen several of these older units where they would only energize the plugs in the left position and not it the start position. I would not suggest an in cab ether system for such a small engine the chance for damage is too high. If a small shot gets it going I would do what I could to verify everything else was right and when it still is slow to start give it a shot once it is blowing white smoke. I don't remember which side the air cleaner is mounted on but you can spray the area under the lift arm on that side while you crank from the front of the machine. I do not recommend ether but if its been on the bottle for a while it may be your only choice.
