Hey all, I've been lurking and reading in the forum working on my current project for a friend and I thought I'd join and pass along some info that someone might find helpful down the line. This 743 was brought to me with a hard start condition. It quickly became apparent that it was going to need some serious work by the amount of blow by. After trying to locate parts for the 1702 and having a case of sticker shock it was decided to replace the engine with a 2203 idi. It was sourced from skid steer power in Jackson MO.
It came to me directly as it outed have from a refer unit. I swapped the oil pan as well as the intake and exhaust manifolds. Skidsteer Power also sourced the adapter plater for me. I have the engine back in and running I am going to have to do some work on the governor as it doesn't run the RPM that the last engine ran. I also need to track down a coolant temp sensor as the one I bought makes the gauge read much too hot. Dead cold the gauge reads About 1/4 up On the scale. Otherwise it was a pretty painless swap. Here's a few pictures from the process. First off here's one of my big girl. 2011 Cat 289C. It's the handiest piece of equipment I own.

Here you can see part of the adapter and where the block had to be drilled to fit the dipstick.

I'll have to grab some more pictures in the daylight. I have the belt guard back on it too now. If anyone had any questions feel free to ask.
