my 743 cranks slowly and jerky like a gas engine with too much timing advance. I went through this machine when I bought it and it has all new factory wiring and a new battery. Starter motor is what was in it. Wondering if this is normal or do they usually crank quickly and maybe it is just a weak starter. Thanks.

Grab the right steering lever, pull it all the way to the left and let it spring back to neutral. See if it cranks better.
Is your battery good? a good battery should spin the engine over pretty quickly, mine cranks quickly, no problems.

Hmmm, sounds unusual, but as long as the motor starts I would not worry about it.
We would need to see a video of it to tell for sure.

thanks for the replies. Tarza I installed the bolt to disable engaging the aux, I think next oil change I will pull the starter and dissasemble to see if it is full of crud and condition of brushes. Does anyone know what kind of starter fits these that I can get at a local autoparts store? I will see if I can post a video, it does start OK but just sounds so labored.

If you can take a video, look up my profile, send me an e-mail.
Are you sure your battery and cable connections are good?
I use a rather large battery in mine, an N70 800-1000 CCA from memory.
Starters are available on e-bay i believe. They aren't cheap, but cheaper than the dealer.

battery was a six month old duralast gold big battery and a new delco alternator. Today it would not start and battery was down to 11 volts. Would not charge and was defective so I got a new one, starts OK but always needs glowplugs heated at least 25 sec so doubt compression is great but does not crank steady maybe injector is a bit advanced I noticed ground wire was 4 guage so I got a 2 guage one which I will change when I finish the job I am doing as well as look at starter. Looks like a garden variety delco remy starter. Could also go to a gear drive starter I guess.

so with new battery it still labors, but always starts. I looked at starters on ebay and they are all gear driven starters while mine is direct drive. My manual shows both but the gear drive came later. Would a gear drive starter have more starting torque than the direct drive or should the direct drive work just as well if all wiring is OK?

Reduction drive would have more torque, i don't believe mine is gear drive, it starts no problem though.

Thanks for the info, my plan is to first change both negative cable to connection point on fan cover with 2 guage cable and also replace positive cable to starter solenoid with molded 2 guage cable. Then if it still sounds the same pull starter dissasemble and inspect armature, brushes and bearing/bushings. As long as I give the glowplugs at lease 35 seconds of preheat it always starts pretty quickly even though it does labor cranking. If all else fails I may get one of the delco MT28 gear drive starters off ebay

well got the gear driven starter from ebay and it looks great, tomorrow will install with new battery cables and see what happens. On another not although the machine works great and is a real workhorse it does have a leak by the spool valves. I have it now with the lift arms up and the bucket was up but I noticed over a week the bucket is down and bucket cylinder is fully extended I suspedt that is the valve leaking. I uses very little oil but I always have to clean it as the oil attracts a lot of dirt. It looks daunting to get the spool valve assembly out because of all the hoses attached, has anyone removed theirs? how bad a job is it?

Its normal for the rams to fall on their own. I think its acceptable for them to leak down about 3” per hour. If they don't bother you, leave them alone.
The control block is a bit of a pest to remove. You may be able to do it in the machine still, its not fun, but can be done.

Tazza thanks for all your help. I bought a gear reduction starter from EBAY like you said 109$ and installed with 2 guage wire. I went to test crank engine, no glo plug heating which before I had to heat about 30-40 seconds then engine would labor and fight starter and it took a lot to start. Today with new starter I just cranked it cold and it spun so fast it starter instantly!!! no glo plug or anything is happened so fast it kinda spooked me. My one other issue is the bucket ram at the bucket will not take grease, replaced fitting same think, as well as lift arms at the upper back of the machine also will not take grease, should I replace the pins?? Thanks in advance, Ole

Sometimes there's just hardened grease in the grease hole in the pins and need to take them out and clean out the holes.

As OM pointed out, the grease can get hard and not allow grease in. The grease nipples can go bad too, so don't rule that out.
Good to hear the new starter works a treat!

I replaced nipples still no grease will go in. I will try to get them out and see what is going on. I have a air powered 10,000 psi gun and it just stalls on these 3 fittings all others take grease just fine.

you guys were correct again, removed the tilt cylinder pin and had to drill out the old grease, it was like hard rubber. reassembled and it greased just fine, on the top rear of the lift arms one side with a new grease fitting, had after I removed the fitting the hole packed with hardened grease put a small mill bit in my drill and got it out down to the pin. Replaced the fitting and it greased up fine. I did the same to the other side but still no go but it had a older fitting so I removed the fitting and tried to shoot grease thru it and no go, drilled the crap out of the fitting and now all is good and that one greased up fine. You guys are the best, thanks.

Glad you got it sorted out. It shows how often the previous owner greased it if the grease was like that.... Sadly, i have had machines like that. As long as you are patient and get the old hard grease out, its all good.
