743 oil

First time owner and forum member I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind and how much oil for a 1988 743 with diesel .

You basically have two choices: Bobcat Hydraulic fluid, or 10w30 motor oil (15w40 if you live in a hot climate). It is really up to you. The Bobcat stuff is about double the price of motor oil. Some people say you should use nothing but Bobcat fluid, that said, there are plenty of guys running motor oil with no ill effects, me included.
As far as quantity, buy it by the 5 gallon pail - you will use all of it sooner or later. 5 gallons should fill your tank once with a bit left over.

So sorry but a little confused and I know I need to get a service manual. So I need to change the engine oil and I was thinking it was around 9.5 quarts with filter. I haven't got around to changing hyd fluid yet

I too thought you were talking hydraulic and not engine, i believe the engine takes 8 litres, or there abouts.
The Kubota specifications i have say 15W40 diesel grade oil, I have always run castrol RX super 15W40
