when I turn the key on it wont open the shutoff valve. if I go back and pull it back by hand it will stay open with the key turned on. when I turn the key off it will close. tried to adjust it but to no avail. need some advice. thanks
 
The easiest thing to try is check the fuse that opens the fuel shutoff solenoid. I have a friend who bought a 2 yr old 773 with 400 hours for 10K at a auction because they couldnt get it started. He put a 50 cent fuse in it and 15 years later its still going strong.

Fuses and electrical connector condition are the quickest and easiest first checks, often that will solve a problem. It sounds like the pull side of the coil is giving the problem, since the hold side seems to work fine.
If the fuses and connections are okay, check the coil itself with a jumper wire from the + battery post to the pin for the pull. If it activates, you have a voltage drop or other issue in the wiring from the switch to it, if it doesn't pull, that side has probably failed or gotten too weak to work.

according to the wiring diagram the wires go back to a timer relay. I suspect its for 12volts then it drops it to 6volts to keep from burning it up. I had thought about trying to jumper it. it has three wires going to it. if I can figure out which wire I will try that first. thanks
