My machine is a bit rattly up top. Im pretty sure its the valves/rockers are the noise seems very isolated to the two “****“ covers on the top. I have the service manual for my machine, but the most it says about adjusting the valves is “make valve adjustment” and there is a picture of a person with a feeler guage. Since this is my first diesel, I dont just want to go tearing into it blindly.
Do I get the motor to TDC and then adjust to specs? Is the correct gap .006”? How do I get the motor to TDC? Is there anything else I should be concerned about while I am doing this, or while I have the motor at TDC?

You will need TDC for each cylinder to adjust the valve clearance, sorry but i never had to do any engine work on mine so i can't tell you what the clearance should be or how to get to TDC. There should be a mark on the front pulley though.
With the rocker covers off you should be able to turn it by hand over to TDC on the pulley then rock it say 10-15 degrees back and forth and ensure the rockers are not moving, if they don't move thats the cylinder that is at TDC.
Wish i could be more help.....
