A friend, who is 900 miles away, called me asking for help on his 1980s 642B with a Mitsubishi gas engine. I'm not well versed in skid steers, but have a wide knowledge of mechanics. I thought I might be able to help find him some info. He says he was working some dirt and all of a sudden it just stopped. It will try to run while he's holding the the start button (apparently an add-on by PO vs. original switch start position) but when he releases the button it dies. He says he has fuel pressure. Evidently has fuel and spark or it wouldn't fire at all, and the switch run position must also be in tact or it wouldn't have fuel pressure from the electric pump. (Just speculating here.) He said he has purchased a new switch, but it is configured different than the old one, and he doesn't have the wiring details. To me, it sounds like maybe a safety switch is malfunctioning, like maybe a temperature stat, water level switch, oil pressure or oil level switch, etc, but I don't know if those are common on this unit or how they might interact with the electrics as I have been unable to find a manual or schematic online. So, my questions are: 1. Does anyone have a service manual PDF they can share for this Bobcat? 2. Does anyone have suggestions he can try which I can pass on to him to get this thing running again.

Probably the closest manual in the thread will be for the 741-742-743 series, one of them had the Mitsi engine and the architecture is pretty much the same.
It sounds like an electrical issue, the first thing I would do is hotwire it; run a wire from the battery to the coil and see if it will run then. If it will, chances are the switch is messed up. If that is the case, it might just need a shot of contact cleaner to get it working again.
